In keeping with the previous column, we will review the saju – Eastern philosophy of reading one’s fate – of two more leaders, in order to understand their life stories and the differences or similarities in leadership styles.
Lula da Silva, the 35th and current President of Brazil, is being ranked as the most popular Brazilian president in its history. He has been elected for president in 2002 and will end his reign in Jan. 2011 after 8 years of presidency.
Lula was born with yin earth energy, which is usually represented by the crop fields. Yin earth is translated into patience and benevolence – It provides a space for people to harvest. The plants obtain nourishment from the soil and yield fruits for people. The yin field opens itself with no strings attached. It is sociable but has internal strengths.
As we have often seen in the saju of political leaders, we see the abundance of earth, self energy, nourished by great fire energy or knowledge star.
However, looking at his early life, his career star (wood) was chopped by metal. When reading one’s fate, the year pillar represents the ages of 0-15, the month pillar stands for 16-30 and the day pillar is for 31 to 45.
The year pillar in this saju, wood-metal combination, suggests da Silva’s life until his age 15-years-old. The weak wood stem was cut by the metal. In this instance, the career star represents his school life as a student. In this saju, the student life, or education was disconnected before the age of 15.
But from another viewpoint, wood can refer to the extremities (legs or arms, or fingers) of a human body. Lula lost the pinky finger of his left hand in an accident while working as a press operator in his youth. This explains the saju reading and the incident eventually led him to take interest in participating in the Workers’ Union.
Lula was named the 2009 Man of the year by prominent European newspapers, ranked the 18th most important person in the world by Newsweek magazine, and is the only Latin American featured in a list of 50 most influential World leaders.
He also named one of the most influential leaders of the world in 2010.
His approval rate by population has shot to exceed 80%, in his final stage of presidency.
Knowledge star-fire, denotes reputation and show that his success will not be damaged.
The strong metal energy also suggests the fact that he is an activist not just a politician.
Now, here is the saju of another leader, Julia Gillard, the current and the first female Prime Minister of Australia, appointed since June 2010.
Unlike those of other leaders, the day master is yin wood in Gillard’s. Although people often think of flowers when they see the yin wood, yin wood does not just represent a tender plant. It’s not showing the word property outward rather deliberate inside. Yin wood acts after a careful consideration. It is like a perfectionist searching for exquisite solutions.
Having powerful metal energy in the month branch, which also combined with earth positioned next to it to become greater metal energy, the wood day master must have sought for fire energy to balance the power.
She suffered from bronchopneumonia in her childhood. Her doctor advised to move to south for its warmer climate. It was definitely a good decision to migrate to Australia.
Metal energy stands not only for career or power but also for the familiar position of husband. Having never married would have protected her from misfortune in her personal life.
Though, there will be continuing challenges in her political life, Gillard will face them prepared and with determination.
Korea will be hosting the Group of 20 Summit in November. Not only political leaders from G20-member countries, but business leaders and thousands of government officials, academics and journalists will visit Korea.
Among the national leaders visiting for the summit, some in particular interest us with their unique life stories leading up to their presidency and influencing their philosophies and ways of politics.
We will review the saju of two leaders, Nicolas Sarcozy, the 23rd and current President of the French Republic and Angela Merkel, the first female Chancellor of Germany.
The two show different leadership qualities in governing their respective countries.
First, Sarcozy was born on Jan. 27, 1955 and his saju is as below.
The French president was born with the energy of yin earth, which is representative of crop fields. Born in the yin earth month, where the energy is very cold, it would have been difficult to plant any crops without the help of fire energy (warmth) in month stem and year branch. His wood energy, which stands for the career star and power, was able to cultivate his own effort (earth) and fire energy. Fire denotes education and licenses, and is represented by the grandfather in terms of family relationships. Water stands for money, and refers to the parents of a relationship.
There seems to be no presence of his father in his youth, but in the inclusions of yin earth in the month and day branches, there exists an abundance of the water element, which depicts his relationships with women in his adulthood.
As a ruler of a nation, we are able to see great persistence and self confidence owing to the earth energies in his saju. Once he had decided to go into politics, it would not have been simple to change his mind. Power (wood) may be his ultimate goal as a ‘field’ energy, but the way he sustain his life is through recognition and reputation (fire energy).
Meantime, the saju of Angela Merke is as below.
The German chancellor was born with the energy of yang wood, which shows a more straightforward leadership that that of yin earth. While the persistence (the same energy as the day master) is not prevalent in her saju, the power-career star has a more dominant energy. Metal denotes career star and power, which is in month stem and also included in earth branch. While earth is the money star, it comes to eventually generates metal energy. In this saju, her father’s presence is noticeable as a major influence, as the earth energy (money star) denotes her father.
It is not surprising that she is the first female Chancellor of Germany and became the second woman to chair the G8, after Margaret Thatcher. For reference, Thatcher was born with the energy of yang metal, or great iron, having a powerful career star (fire) and knowledge star (earth) in her saju.
On another note, Thatcher was often called the ‘Iron Lady’.
Merkel has been often compared to Thatcher as the first female German chancellor and the youngest German chancellor since the Second World War, the first with a background in natural sciences, etc. But according to her saju reading, Merkel’s life is a bit more vulnerable compared to that of Thatcher.
There are myriad outcomes due to the conflict between the two earth energies in her month and day branches.
If the leadership of Sarkozy is the type to push ahead regardless of any obstacles in the process, that of Merkel is more about the challenges and persuasion until she reaches the goal.
It would be interesting to research the saju of global leaders to find out where the individual leaderships are derived, based on their innate fate.

A plastic surgeon recently released a report detailing the most appealing female faces for each ethnic group. Statistics on optimal ratio and shape of one’s eyes, cheekbones, nose and chin were unveiled in composite pictures of various races.
How is this related with saju, which tells of one’s fate ?
Historically, people have yearned to read their fates through a variety of channels. There were many historical academic references about their studies.
In summary, their efforts were made through three major philosophical concepts, Heaven, Earth and Man. We may apply these in various ways. In terms of understanding one’s destiny, they wanted to know the teachings of heaven by saju, or Chinese Astrology from one’s birth – although the concepts of heaven, earth and man are also found within saju, too. The teachings of earth were read through Feng shui. Lastly, the teachings of man were expressed in appearance. Ancient masters tried to read people’s faces along with saju to tell their destinies.
These ancient teachings were not based on superficial observations but through the understanding of energy flow.
While saju, the teaching of heaven has been comprehended as something set from the birth, Feng shui and Face reading are in the human realm that people can improve by making effort, practicing virtue and studying. Many scholars studied only to realize that their saju did not lead them to noble positions, Frustrate, they would then try to create changes in a positive manner through the face readings and Feng shui.
Many people have asked me what are the differences between face reading and face impressions. Both share many things in common but not all. Thus, the above mentioned composite pictures of an attractive face is able to explain some desires aspects but not other in terms of face readings. The same applies to other studies, such as composite pictures of trustworthy or untrustworthy features done by foreign scholars. For example, a wide bulky nose end denotes fortune in face readings, but nowadays people want small, sharp noses through plastic surgery, which people believe is an attractive feature. Likewise, it is appreciated that plastic surgery may give some people confidence about their appearance. But there always are pros and cons.
As one gets older, experiencing each life, one learns how to view others just by looking at others’ faces. An experienced merchant, for example, knows whether a customer will actually buy goods or not, just by looking at the customer’s face. There seem to be certain stereo types about personalities as well, as we watch actors and actress casted as criminal roles or political leaders, etc.
Out ancestors understood human being as small universe and they applied the oriental philosophy – yin, yang, and the five elements – to understand man’s fate.
The natural curves in the human body and face – protruding parts are considered yang, while concave areas are yin. The earth element is read by flesh, the water element by blood, wood by the hairs, metal by teeth and bones etc.
Face reading is to study a person’s external feature that reflects one’s spirit and mind. It is the analysis of a face as a potential indicator of character and personal qualities. So a face reading is to observe one’s fate.
On the one hand, it is based on the statistical factors from what we actually see (external feature) but also about harmony and balance, and the overall energy (Qi) flow in a face. There are certain criteria on how to read each part of the face, but we must be able to read the overall image to see whether they are agreeable or disagreeable.
It is indeed a surprising if you are able to read whether one is rich or poor, smart or stupid, impetuous or relaxed, careful or thoughtful just by looking at one’s face, on top of reading one’s destiny by saju
Some blind plastic surgeries may need to be adjusted by an adequate understanding of face reading or face impression, whether in ancient or in modern terms.

Kim Jong-un,
the next leader of North Korea
Kim Jong-un, the hier of Kim Jong-il, is appearing frequently in the foreign press these days, due to Kim Jong-il’s determination to demonstrate his son as his successor in leading North Korea.
A tremendous amount of attention has been pointed toward Kim from all over the world. It is partly because North Korea is the only communist country left with a hereditary head of state. They play outside of international regulations and are possibly researching nuclear power. So it is not surprising that the power shift in this country is paid global attention.
There is a criticism in another aspect that their hereditary rule is immoral in a situation where North Korean people suffer in poverty.
Last weekend’s breaking news was that the top defector, Hwang Jang-yop was found death in his house. It was a significant coincidence to hear of his sudden death on the 65th anniversary of the founding of the North Korea’s ruling Workers’ Party.
There was a great conflict of interests between the late Hwang, the former secretary, who denied the North Korea’s regime and the young successor, Kim Jong-un.
I, as a saju master, have been tempted to read Kim Jong-un’s fate since he was first revealed to be the next leader of North Korea, but there are ambiguities about his date of birth and even exact year of birth. It seems obvious that his birthday is on Jan. 8, considering the fact that the North declared Jan. 8 a national holiday. However there are some controversies about his age, whether 26 or 27.
In the meantime, some saju masters have already compared his saju with the birth year of 1983 and others. A physiognomist has also written about Kim’s fate through a face reading.
Under these circumstances, it sounds rather absurd to read Kim’s saju. And it is difficult to read either the man’s saju with clear objectivity, given the atmosphere of negativity.
On the contrary, let’s try to read Kim’s face and gestures based on footage of North Korean events in comparison with his father, Kim Jong-il and grandfather, Kim Il-sung.
Historically, reading a person’s face results in different meanings from reading fate by one’s birth date. The latter – saju – is to decode symbolic signs from one’s birth. It is to read one’s fate, innate destiny, which is only slightly altered by environment.
However face reading is to study the external feature that reflects one’s spirit and mind. In other words, it is to observe one’s fate indicated by an aura or impression.
Face reading of course must take into account the genetic qualities of a person’s appearance, but there is also the belief that one’s countenance is altered by how one thinks and acts as well as through environment.
In a reading, we usually divide a person’s face into three parts. The first segment includes the upper eyebrow, which represents inherent fortune and reputation. This part will usually show one’s social status and innate abilities.
The second part is from below the eyebrow to the end of the nose. This portion shows one’s career path, wealth, love and ambition. It expresses one’s efforts and acquired fortune. Lastly, the third part is the mouth and chin. It shows how one treats their inferiors, maintains organization and nourishes their relationships.
If we are able to compare the faces of the three successive leaders in North Korea, Kim Il-sung, Kim Jong-il and Kim Jong-un, we will be able to find their differences and identities.
First of all, according to photos, it is interesting to see that Kim Jong-un’s face and gestures closely imitate those of Kim Il-sung in many ways.
Instead of measuring each part and shape individually, face reading is to observe the overall appearance, whether each section is harmonized and balanced. So it is clear that Kim is destined (whether it is his will or not) to follow his grand-father’s footsteps and show that he is the true successor of Kim Il-sung.
In face reading, it is said that the shape of forehead does not change through age, although wrinkles may appear. So the aspect that indicates one’s social status is innate. It also reveals one’s foresight, reasoning power and perceptivity.
Kim Jong-un’s forehead is not as spacious as his predecessors. Eyebrows indicate one’s interpersonal skill. Kim Il-sung had notably brushy brows. The way he commanded his subordinates was well-known, while Kim Jong-il doesn’t have this skill. The shape of Kim Jong-un’s mouth and chin to tell his latter fate is still undetermined. It seems his chin is not well shaped to sustain the overall energy of his face. However, his downturned mouth tells that he has strong will power and is persistent in whatever he does.
Kim Il-sung made a wrong decision when he passed his power to his son, Kim Jong-il, who does not show proper leadership in his face.
Even though North Korea tries to pave Kim Jong-un by imitating Kim Il-sung’s mannerisms, the life path of the former will be different. If we had the opportunity to read the face of Kim Il-sung in his youth, we would have been able to see that. The truth of life cannot be manipulated.
